Social media
When it comes to social media the online landscape has
changed immensely since I was a child. When I look at it the dynamics of public
opinion have also changed immensely, it changed from, be very careful of everything
you do or say online and that it’s not all that important for everyday life. Then
once the iPhone came out and so did myspace and Facebook, the ideas around social
media in my sibling’s generation as millennials and mine as the very beginning
of gen z started to look at the internet and social media completely different
from that of my parents. Communication strategies have also changed a great amount
also. Companies have in recent years
started to look at communication in the workplace different not just on the
public sector of things. For instance, companies are using teams and other online
meeting locations like zoom to hold meetings or talk to coworkers. When you
look at the private sector or personal usage. People are now talking to people
online more and more. You have dating apps social media like snapchat, Facebook,
Instagram, YouTube, and a lot more. In fact, there was a study done about how
45% of men have never approached a woman in person. “In the entire dataset, 29%
of men said they never approached a woman in person before. 27% said it had
been more than one year. This was larger for men in the age 18-25 group: 45%
had never approached a woman in person.” (DatePsychology, 2025). With that
being said I am unsure how accurate or true this study is. But it goes to show
that most men or women feel more comfortable talking to others online.
There are also some potential implications for society,
democracy, and other interpersonal relationships. For instance, social media platforms
give millions of people the ability to voice their opinions on everything like
what cake is better to the dress is blue and black not white and gold, all the
way to political topics. There are a
great many things that could be said about the implications of social media in
the current political climate and how the current president like to use his
social media. That could be considered bad for one view and good for the other
and vice versa. Social media also allows democracy to have now an even larger
voice, to give an example, there was a very popular social media influencer who
testified before a Senate committee about the second amendment. And then there
is the implications of how it can affect interpersonal relationships. People can
say or do almost anything they want on social media, which can have great cause
and effect on interpersonal relationships.
